What I’m Looking For This Election

A sense of balance and a party that is centred.

There’s a lot to think about for this upcoming federal election. There are so many issues at the forefront that need attention, funding, and commitment to resolve. All of the parties have different ideas – some of which I think are fantastic that I can get behind as a citizen. My problem is, I want to vote for multiple good ideas and not one party.

I’m worried that the federal parties have gone further down the left and right spectrums respectively and are too busy trying to grab power that none of them may actually get anything done. Or worse, they’ll become more destructive.

What I want to see from our federal candidates are actions that promote teamwork, accountability, and transparency. What I want to hear is how the teamwork is going, honesty and ownership when it comes to their failures, and positive language about their political counterparts instead of takedowns and insults. Canada has gone through enough division, the last thing we need is more of it during election season. I don’t have time for those kinds of politics. I’ve heard enough about how much such and such won’t do, but I need to hear more about how there will be collaboration to make good ideas work.

I am still concerned about why we have an election coming up to begin with.

We’re still in a pandemic (This is not up for debate. I am not going to entertain this. You can leave if you’re one of them “Covid is over!” people). There are forest fires in BC threatening the lives and safety of people, especially those who live in the interior. The Taliban just took over Afghanistan and the world is trying to make sense of the last 20 years of fighting them.

Money could be better spent to resolve local and national issues – like dedicating funds to fulfil the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation report, or towards affordable housing, public transit, and a number of things. I guess those are key issues that will come up during the debates and campaign trails. Maybe we need an election then.

But whoever wins this election, I need them to be a party that sits in the dead center. A party that ACTUALLY represents the feelings of Canadians by understanding what people want and need, using facts and applying common sense to make decisions, and trusting proper sources of information. A government that is committed to actually being for the people, by the people.

Otherwise, what a waste of time.

  1. Long time follower, first time reader, but a big fan none the less.

I couldn’t agree more with what you’ve written! And yes, we are still very much still in the midst of a pandemic with many waves yet to come.

I think the issue I have with what you’ve written is you’ve posed no resolution. I feel like many would agree with what you’ve written, but I have yet to see a legitimate answer offered up. And I believe that in of itself is the problem.

I also feel it’s important to highlight the fact we live in a digital era where most of what campaigning has become is “sound bytes” and “TikToks” – I mean that’s all I see 1 political party doing these days (yeah, I won’t name them). But that’s obviously for a reason, study shows that this is what the younger voters engage with. I mean can the average youth voter identify a picture of Andrew Sheer?

Okay, I’ve clearly found myself rambling, so I’ll bring it home…

I personally feel the political climate of divisiveness we currently find ourselves in is a direct reflection of the social climate.

When a political party’s goal is to gain votes, ideology goes out the window and platforms break down to give way to campaigns that have 0 to no real impact on making this country a better place…

So resolution? It would be easy to say stricter CRTC guidelines on the use of social media as a campaigning tool… but could the ugly reality be that we just don’t have ANY viable candidates?!?!

    Happy Voting!!

    1. You’re absolutely correct, Paul. I don’t have a solution at all, which also bothers me. The only thing I can think of is wanting to see parties and their respective candidates work together without having a power trip. That said, we’ll see how this election plays out. Happy voting to you too!
